Most crucially, Robert Dornhelm, the director, appears to have struck lucky in his search for the right Anne Frank from among 1,200 candidates. He said he picked Hannah Taylor Gordon, 13, a gangly and bright-eyed English girl, after seeing just two minutes of her audition tape because of her uncanny resemblance to Anne and her poise. Since filming began in late December, however, it has been her acting that has most impressed... For someone whose performance will make or break the movie, Ms. Taylor Gordon seems remarkably at ease, almost never fluffing her lines (One-Take-Hannah, as one of the production team calls her), able to move in and out of character at a moment's notice, conveying Anne's volatile temperament as if she were the moody teenager, except she is acting. For one shot, she talked off-camera in the trembling voice of Anne emerging from a harrowing nightmare and, between takes, she sucked on a strawberry sherbet...
